Recurrent Headaches: Beware of Brain Tumors!
By: dr. Agung Heri Wahyudi, Sp.BS, Subsp. FN-TB, FINSS, FNNF, FINPS, SH, MH

Headaches are a very common complaint experienced by many people. They range from tension headaches due to stress, migraines, to headaches caused by lack of sleep. However, what if headaches come repeatedly, get worse, and do not improve even after taking medication? This condition should be taken seriously as it may indicate a serious disorder, one of which is a brain tumor.
Understanding Headaches
Most headaches are benign and not dangerous. Examples include:
- Tension headache: usually feels like the head is tightly wrapped.
- Migraine: throbbing pain, often on one side of the head, may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound.
- Cluster headache: severe pain around the eye, occurring in groups during certain periods.
Although generally harmless, headaches that appear continuously or change in pattern require further medical attention.
When Should Headaches Be a Warning Sign?
Seek medical attention immediately if the headache is accompanied by one or more of the following signs:
- Headaches become more frequent and more severe over time.
- Sudden and extremely severe headache.
- Headaches that wake you up from sleep.
- Recurrent nausea and vomiting without a clear cause.
- Vision disturbances, such as blurred or double vision.
- Seizures, weakness in limbs, or difficulty speaking.
- Changes in behavior, emotions, or memory.
These symptoms may indicate increased pressure inside the head or disturbances in brain tissue.
Headaches Caused by Brain Tumors
A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of cells within the brain or surrounding tissues. Tumors can be benign or malignant. Their presence can compress brain tissue and increase pressure inside the skull, causing headaches.
Characteristics of headaches caused by brain tumors include:
- Pain is more severe in the morning.
- Worsens when coughing, sneezing, or straining.
- Does not improve with regular pain relievers.
- Presence of other neurological symptoms such as seizures, balance problems, or personality changes.
Keep in mind that not all headaches indicate a brain tumor. However, recurring headaches with unusual patterns should not be ignored.
Examination and Diagnosis
To determine the exact cause of recurring headaches, doctors will perform:
- Medical interviews and physical examination.
- Neurological examination to assess brain and nerve function.
- Supporting tests such as CT scan or MRI of the head to view brain structures. These tests are important to rule out serious conditions and determine the appropriate treatment.
Treatment of Brain Tumors
Treatment for brain tumors depends on the type, size, location of the tumor, and the patient’s overall condition. Treatment options include:
- Surgical removal of the tumor.
- Radiotherapy.
- Chemotherapy.
- Targeted therapy or immunotherapy in certain cases.
Early detection plays a major role in treatment success and the patient’s quality of life.
Do Not Ignore Recurring Headaches
Headaches that occur occasionally are generally not dangerous. However, if headaches occur repeatedly, become more severe, or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.
Early examination can help identify the cause more quickly and prevent more serious complications.
