A periodontist (Sp.Perio) is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases of the tooth-supporting tissues (periodontium), including the gums, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament, and root cementum. In addition to treating gingivitis and periodontitis, periodontists also perform various procedures to maintain the health of the tooth-supporting tissues, including periodontal surgery and supportive therapy for dental implants.
