Nerve Health Begins with Daily Habits
By: dr. A. Melissa, Sp.N, AIFO-K, DAIFIDN

We often only consider nerve health when symptoms such as headaches, tingling sensations, forgetfulness, sleep difficulties, or physical weakness begin to appear. Yet, the nervous system plays a vital role in virtually all bodily activities.
Nerves enable us to move, think, perceive sensations, maintain balance, and regulate various bodily functions.
Maintaining Nerve Health
The good news is that maintaining nerve health does not always require complicated measures. There are many simple daily habits that can help support the health of the brain and nervous system.
Get Enough Sleep
Sleep is more than just a time for rest; while you sleep, your body and brain undergo vital restorative processes.
A lack of sleep or frequently staying up too late can leave you feeling fatigued and struggling to concentrate; it can also affect your mood and, in the long run, impact your brain health.
Try to go to bed and wake up at roughly the same time every day. Adults generally need about 7–9 hours of sleep per night.
Stay Active
Your brain and nervous system thrive when your body is active. Regular physical activity helps maintain fitness, vascular health, and blood circulation throughout the body.
You don't necessarily need to engage in strenuous exercise. Walking, cycling, swimming, or simply standing up and moving around more often during work breaks can be simple yet beneficial steps.
If your job requires you to sit in front of a computer for long periods, make sure to stand up and move periodically.
Choose Foods That Benefit Your Body and Brain
What you eat every day plays a role in maintaining the health of both your body and brain.
Increase your intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fish, and good sources of protein. Conversely, limit foods that are high in sugar, salt, and saturated fats.
Don't forget to stay well-hydrated by drinking enough fluids.
Manage Stress
Stress is a part of daily life. Work, family, financial issues, and various other demands can leave your mind feeling overwhelmed.
If stress persists, it can affect your sleep quality, concentration, mood, and overall physical health.
Therefore, make time for activities that help your body and mind relax. A leisurely walk, exercise, pursuing a hobby, talking to loved ones, or simply taking a break from your routine are all simple options.
Cut Back on Unhealthy Habits
Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and a lack of physical activity can increase the risk of various diseases, which may ultimately impact brain and nervous system health. Maintaining nerve health is essentially part of maintaining overall physical health.
Manage Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, and Cholesterol
Vascular health is closely linked to brain health. High blood pressure, diabetes, and uncontrolled cholesterol levels can increase the risk of cerebrovascular disorders, including stroke.
Therefore, regular health check-ups are important, especially for those with specific risk factors.
Keep Your Brain Active
Just like the body, the brain needs to be used continuously to stay active.
Reading, learning new things, playing memory games, solving puzzles, or trying out new skills are simple activities that can stimulate the brain.
It doesn't always have to be difficult. Learning a new recipe, trying an activity you’ve never done before, or picking up a new skill can also be fun ways to keep your brain active.
Do Not Ignore Emerging Symptoms
The body often signals when something requires attention.
A sudden, severe headache; weakness or numbness on one side of the body; sudden slurred or difficult speech; sudden vision problems; seizures; loss of consciousness; or a sudden loss of balance are symptoms that require immediate medical attention.
Do not wait for symptoms to worsen before seeking medical help.
Healthy Nerves, Smooth Daily Activity
Maintaining nerve health can actually start with simple things: getting enough sleep, staying physically active, eating nutritious food, managing stress, and maintaining overall physical health.
We do not need to wait for illness to strike before we start caring about our brain and nerve health.
Ultimately, nerve health is not just about preventing disease; it is about preserving our ability to think, move, work, engage in activities, and enjoy life to the fullest.
Start with one healthy habit today. Take small, consistent steps every day for better nerve and physical health.
If you experience any nerve-related complaints or symptoms, do not ignore them. Consult a doctor to receive a proper examination and appropriate treatment.
