Medical check up (MCU) or health check-up should ideally be done at least once a year. The fairly competitive price may make many people think about recapitulating or reducing the intensity of MCU that is done to only once every few years. In fact, there are many benefits if you do MCU regularly.

Purpose of Medical Check Up

The following are some of the benefits you will get if you have regular medical check-ups, at least once a year:

  • Detect health problems early. Having a health check means allowing the medical team to see in detail the “contents” of your entire body. This means that you and the doctor concerned can both see what potential health problems you have so that they can be treated immediately. This is important to measure and prevent the risk of developing chronic diseases that often do not show symptoms in the early stages. Examples are cancer and diabetes.

  • Helps reduce the risk of disease. In addition to detecting health problems early, regular medical check-ups can also help you see certain signs that are risk factors for serious diseases. So, doctors or related health experts can help you make lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of these diseases. For example, a fasting blood sugar test can let you see whether you have early signs of possible diabetes or not.

  • Monitor your health condition. Even if you already have a chronic disease, such as hypertension, diabetes, or heart disease, regular health checks are still important and can provide you with benefits. This is because these checks allow doctors and related health experts to monitor the development of your health condition, arrange future care and treatment plans, and prevent complications.

  • Get immunizations and vaccinations. For children, the elderly, and individuals with impaired immune systems, having regular medical check-ups will also provide special benefits. This is because these vulnerable groups can get the latest immunizations and vaccinations and be prioritized in order to protect them from new diseases or potential diseases.

Before undergoing a medical check-up, it is important to inform the doctor about the following:

  • Complaints or symptoms experienced
  • Medications currently being used, including supplements and herbal products
  • Patient and family medical history, surgical history, test results, and previous medical treatments
  • Current diet
  • Medical devices implanted in the body, such as pacemakers

Examinations Performed in a Medical Check Up

Here are some tests or examinations that can be done in a medical check up:

1. Medical History Check

In the initial stage of a medical check-up, the doctor will ask questions about the complaints experienced, as well as the patient's and family's medical history.

The doctor will also ask several questions about lifestyle, such as diet, exercise intensity, and smoking and alcohol consumption habits.

2. Vital Signs Check

Vital signs checked in a medical check up include:

  • Heart rate
A normal heart rate is 60–100 beats per minute.

  • Respiratory rate
Normal breathing ranges from 12–20 times per minute.

  • Body temperature
Normal body temperature averages between 36–37 degrees Celsius.

  • Blood pressure
Blood pressure that is classified as normal is 90/60–120/80 mmHg.

3. Physical examination

During a physical examination, the patient will be asked to stand, sit, or lie down, depending on the part of the body to be examined.

A physical examination usually begins by measuring the patient's weight and height, to determine whether the patient is underweight or overweight. After that, the doctor will examine the entire body, from head to toe.

In a thorough examination, the doctor may begin by looking for abnormalities in the skin, hair, or nails, and pressing or tapping certain parts of the body. If pain occurs when a certain part of the body is pressed or tapped, tell the doctor.

Next, the doctor will examine the eyes, nose, ears, and organs. The doctor will use an aid called an otoscope to examine the condition of the ears and a stethoscope to hear the sounds of the heart, lungs, and digestive tract.

In a muscle strength examination, cooperation from the patient is required to perform certain movements according to the doctor's instructions. If you do not understand the instructions given, do not hesitate to ask.

The condition of the genitals will also be examined during a physical examination. In men, the penis and testicles will be examined to detect infection, inflammation, or changes in size. Meanwhile, to check the prostate, the doctor will perform a digital rectal examination to detect whether or not the prostate gland is enlarged.

In women, the pelvic organs including the vagina, vulva, cervix, ovaries, and uterus will be examined to detect sexually transmitted infections or other health problems.

Meanwhile, to detect tumors or breast cancer, the doctor will look at and press the breast area. The doctor can also check the condition of the lymph nodes by feeling the folds, such as the armpits or groin, to find signs of lumps in the area.

4. Supporting investigation

In addition to the above examinations, several supporting examinations below can also be carried out to strengthen the diagnosis:

  • Laboratory examination

Laboratory tests can be done by taking blood, urine, or stool samples, to see the number of blood cells, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, or chemicals that are markers of organ function. These samples can also be used to detect abnormalities in urine and stool.

  • Scanning

Scans, such as ultrasound and X-rays, are used to see the condition of internal organs more clearly. Organs that can be examined include the lungs, liver, pancreas, kidneys, spleen, bladder, prostate, and uterus. In women, mammography or breast ultrasound is done to detect breast tumors.

  • Cardiac recording examination

Heart recording or electrocardiography (ECG) aims to record the electrical activity of the heart by attaching electrodes to the skin of the chest, arms, and legs. ECG examinations can be performed in a lying position or while doing activities, such as running on a treadmill.

  • Pap smear

Pap smear is a screening procedure performed to detect cervical cancer in women. Pap smear examination can detect the presence of foreign cells (precancerous cells) in the cervix that have the potential to develop into cancer.

After Medical Check Up

After undergoing a medical check-up, patients are usually allowed to go home and do their normal activities. The doctor will conduct an analysis in the form of recommendations and suggestions from the results of the medical check-up.
