Mpox: Understanding the Disease, Its Symptoms, and How to Prevent It
by: dr. Christian Hartono, Sp.PD
Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is a rare disease caused by a virus from the Orthopoxvirus genus. This virus is similar to the virus with chickenpox, but much milder. Mpox can spread through direct contact with skin lesions, body fluids, or contaminated materials. Let's understand Mpox so that we are more vigilant.
What does Mpox mean?
Mpox is a disease caused by a virus that can cause symptoms such as fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes. This disease is usually mild and heals on its own within a few weeks. However, in some cases, Mpox can cause serious complications.
Symptoms of Mpox:
Symptoms of Mpox are usually similar to those of smallpox and appear within 7-14 days after exposure to the virus. Early symptoms include:
Fever
Headache
Muscle pain
A few days later, a rash will appear, usually starting on the face and then spreading to other parts of the body. This rash usually starts as small red spots that then turn into fluid-filled blisters like chickenpox. The most distinctive symptom of Mpox is a lump in the neck or armpit called Lymphadenopathy
Tips to Avoid Mpox:
Avoid direct contact with people infected with Mpox: If you know someone who is infected with Mpox, avoid direct contact with them.
Wash your hands regularly: Wash your hands with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer.
Use a mask: Diligently use a mask to avoid exposure to the virus.
Keep your distance from people who are infected: Do not use items together with people who are infected with Mpox
Avoid contact with infected animals: Mpox can be transmitted from animals to humans. Avoid contact with animals that may be infected, such as rats, squirrels, and monkeys.
Do not have multiple partners: Mpox can be transmitted through sexual contact. Do not have multiple partners and use condoms during sex to reduce the risk of transmission.
