photoaging

Photoaging is premature skin aging caused by sun exposure (ultraviolet rays). Besides being slightly unsightly, especially when it appears on the face, premature aging also increases the risk of skin cancer.

What are the signs of premature aging? How can you prevent or treat it if you've already experienced premature aging? Read the full article below.

Signs of Premature Skin Aging

Exposure to ultraviolet light, whether from direct sunlight or artificial ultraviolet light, over many years will alter the DNA in skin cells. The short-term effect is premature aging of skin most exposed to direct sunlight, such as the face, neck, backs of the hands, arms, legs, and upper chest. Signs of premature skin aging can include:

  • Spider veins (broken capillaries) appear on the nose, cheeks, and neck.
  • Loss of color or elasticity in sun-exposed areas of the skin.
  • Deepening of lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth.
  • Worry lines appear on the forehead.
  • Red, rough, scaly patches (actinic keratoses) appear on the skin.
  • Pigmentation changes, such as discolored patches or patches (melasma), freckles, liver spots (solar lentigines), and age spots.
  • White patches appear on the arms, legs, and backs of the hands.
  • Uneven skin tone or texture.
  • Skin thinning occurs.

How to Prevent Premature Aging from Sunlight

Avoiding sun exposure, which can cause premature skin aging, can be quite difficult, especially if you're frequently outdoors in the sun. However, you can take the following preventative measures to reduce your risk of premature aging:

  • Use a high-SPF, water-resistant sunscreen on exposed skin every day. It's best to reapply sunscreen every two hours.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and long-sleeved clothing and pants when in the sun.
  • Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

How to Treat Premature Skin Aging

Once ultraviolet light has altered the DNA of skin cells, the damage cannot be reversed. However, this doesn't mean you can't treat premature skin aging. Doctors can help you address photoaging through the following treatment methods:

  • Laser Skin Rejuvenation

    • Laser skin rejuvenation is a skin treatment method using an infrared laser to remove advanced wrinkles and tighten skin without surgery. This method works by delivering heat to the layers beneath the skin, stimulating collagen production and making the skin appear firmer.
  • Microdermabrasion

    • Microdermabrasion is a treatment for premature aging that aims to remove age spots and milder acne scars. This method uses a handheld device to spray tiny crystals onto the skin's surface, which then exfoliates the skin and removes dead skin cells.
  • Chemical Peels

    • Chemical peels refer to chemical exfoliation methods used to reduce areas of skin damaged by sun exposure, pigmented discoloration, or light scars.
  • Dermal Filler Injections

    • Dermal filler injections, also known as soft tissue augmentation, are a treatment for premature aging that involves injecting soft tissue into the skin. This treatment aims to replace the body's lost natural collagen.
  • Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy

    • IPL therapy differs from conventional laser therapy methods. It works by delivering multiple wavelengths of light with each pulse to eliminate premature aging.
