computer vision syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) or computer vision syndrome is a condition that often occurs due to prolonged use of digital screens. Common symptoms include tired eyes, blurred vision, and a sensation like there is a foreign object in the eye which interferes with comfort when blinking. This condition appears especially after spending hours in front of a computer screen, cellphone or other digital device.

Factors Causing Computer Vision Syndrome:

  1. Not Optimal Lighting: Lighting that is too bright or too dim can worsen CVS symptoms. Bright light makes the eyes tired quickly, while minimal lighting forces the eyes to work harder to focus.
  2. Influence of Air Conditioner (AC): An air-conditioned room with cold temperatures directed directly at the face can cause dry eyes, worsening eye strain and irritation.
  3. Wrong Body Posture: Poor sitting position can increase stress on the neck and eyes, causing headaches and blurred vision. Correct posture while working is very important to reduce eye strain.

CVS Severity Level: Symptoms of CVS can range from mild, such as tired and dry eyes, to serious problems such as blurred vision, persistent headaches, or eye infections if not treated immediately.

How to Overcome and Prevent Computer Vision Syndrome:

  1. The 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, stop for a moment and look at something about 20 feet (about 6 meters) away for 20 seconds to rest your eyes.
  2. Use the Right Glasses: For those who have refractive errors, it is important to use appropriate glasses so that eye strain does not increase.
  3. Arrange for Balanced Lighting: Make sure the lighting around the workplace is not too bright or dim. The right light really helps reduce eye strain.
  4. Avoid Direct Exposure to AC: Don't let the air conditioner point directly at your face, because cold air can dry out your eyes. Take time to get outside so your eyes get natural moisture.
  5. Pay Attention to Screen Distance: The position of the screen should be at eye level and 40-60 cm away from the eyes to avoid eye strain.
  6. Use Eye Drops: For contact lens users, avoid prolonged use and use lubricating eye drops to keep the eyes moist.

By following preventive measures and proper treatment, CVS can be treated or prevented.

Don't forget to check your eye health regularly, especially if you are often in front of a computer screen.
